Contraceptive ServicesWe are here to provide a wide variety of contraception and other sexual health services for our own patients. We will give non-judgemental advice on any sexual health issue whether you are young or old, gay or straight. Patient confidentiality is a high priority of our Practice and applies equally to all patients regardless of their age. Young people (including those under 16) are entitled to the same confidentiality as all other patients. This includes respecting their wishes to withhold information from parents or guardians. The GP involved will decide if the patient is able to fully understanding the issue and any necessary treatment and will decide the extent to which confidentiality guidelines apply in each individual case. Remember we are here to help and not to judge you. Oral Contraception (The Pill)Issued on prescription. An initial appointment with a GP is required and once established on treatment a patient will be reviewed annually by the GP. click here for further information Depo Provera (Contraceptive Injection)This is an injectable contraceptive. An initial appointment is required with a GP who after discussion will then refer the patient to the Practice Nurse for commencement of treatment. Follow up arrangements are made through the Practice Nurse. click here for further information Implanon (Contraceptive Implant)This is an implant which is inserted into the upper arm by a GP. An initial assessment needs to take place with a GP and a further appointment arranged with a GP and Nurse to have the implant fitted. Patients will be recalled when the implant is due to be changed. click here for further information IUCD (Coil)
After initial discussion with a GP, patient needs to attend appointment for fitting ideally 3-4 days after their period has started. The GP may arrange to have routine cervical swabs carried out prior to the fitting taking place. Patients will be offered an appointment to have the coil checked 6 weeks post fitting and then yearly checks thereafter. Patients will be informed when the coil is due to be changed. click here for further information Diaphragm (The Cap)Patients wishing to use this form of contraception should request a joint appointment with Dr Nicolson and the Practice Nurse and state the reason for their appointment. This allows the receptionist to book the correct length of appointment. Patients will thereafter be offered yearly checks. click here for further information Emergency Contraception (Morning After Pill)This is a tablet which can be issued after unprotected sexual intercourse. This is most effective if taken soon after having unprotected intercourse but can be prescribed up to a maximum of 72 hours after the event. This should not be used as a regular method of contraception and a GP will discuss future contraceptive options when you attend for this. Patients need to make an initial appointment with a GP for this.
